The Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) ratio of the U.S. commercial banking industry rose steadily throughout 2023 and 2024, with the final quarter of 2024 marking the **** consecutive quarter of growth. However, this upward trend ended in the first quarter of 2025, as the CET1 ratio edged down slightly to ***** percent. In the second quarter of 2025, the CET1 ratio further declined to ***** percent. Over the broader observation period, the most significant decline occurred in 2007, driven by the global financial crisis. Subsequent declines were recorded in 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and again in 2021 and 2022.
